Kudos to My Buffalo News Delivery Person

Posted by Michael Rebmann on January 30th, 2008

This morning when I was awakened by the high winds, I was pondering the chances that my Buffalo News might have blown away.  The wind was ferocious.  Luckily, I have a thoughtful and resourceful delivery person.  I found my paper in the orange plastic bag with the handles around a stake marking the property for the plow service.

Thank you Mr./Ms. deliver person, you made my morning!

Worst Reason Yet for Voting for Obama

Posted by Michael Rebmann on January 27th, 2008

While listening to the news on WBEN this morning, I heard the worst reason yet for voting for Barack Obama.  A mother in South Carolina voted for Barack for her children.  She said, she’s always told her children that “you can be anything you want to be” and that Barack Obama shows that the statement is true.

I’m sure that Idi Amin and Adolf Hitler also believed that they could be anything they wanted to be.  Presidents need to be elected based on ideas and qualifications, not race or gender.

Ron Paul Unveils a Real Economic Stimulus Plan

Posted by Michael Rebmann on January 24th, 2008

Four-pronged approach will strengthen the economy by reforming taxes, cutting spending, improving monetary policy and eliminating burdensome regulations

ARLINGTON, VIRGINIA –Republican presidential candidate Ron Paul has unveiled a comprehensive economic revitalization package.   The four-pronged plan is designed to stem the current economic slide and address the unsound governmental policies that are harming Americans’ pocketbooks.

“Real economic reform must address the underlying reasons for the current economic malaise,” said Ron Paul.  “This plan is more than just a band-aid for our economy; it fundamentally reforms four areas where government policies are damaging our national economy.  When enacted, my plan will provide both short-term stimulus, and lay the groundwork for long-term prosperity.”

The comprehensive economic revitalization plan is available online at: www.RonPaul2008.com/Prosperity

The four areas that the plan covers are:

  • Tax Reform - Reduce the tax burden and eliminate taxes that punish investment and savings, including job-killing corporate taxes.
  • Spending Reform - Eliminate wasteful spending. Reduce overseas commitments.  Freeze all non-defense, non-entitlement spending at current levels.
  • Monetary Policy Reform - Expand openness with the Federal Reserve and require the Fed to televise its meetings.  Return value to our money.
  • Regulatory Reform - Repeal Sarbanes/Oxley regulations that push companies to seek capital outside of US markets.  Stop restricting community banks from fostering local economic growth.

Congressman Paul has written or co-sponsored numerous bills to enact the policies in his plan.  In Congress, he has been a champion of lower taxes and limited government.

Congressman Paul is the ranking member on the House Financial Services Committee’s Subcommittee on Domestic and International Monetary Policy, Trade, and Technology.  In Congress, Dr. Paul has never voted for a tax increase or for an unbalanced budget.

Tax Breaks and Government BS

Posted by Michael Rebmann on January 23rd, 2008

The economic stimulus package proposed by Bush and the rest of the federal government only compounds the economic problem and postpones paying for decades of out of control government spending.

In an important concession to Democrats, Treasury Secretary Henry M. Paulson Jr. signaled that he is open to including breaks even for those who pay little to no income taxes.

Typically, this package is being sold with disingenuous language.  You can not give a tax break to someone who pays no taxes.  It is a gift financed coercively by people who do pay taxes.

The net effect of this stimulus package will be increasing the National Debt and more borrowing from China.

It must be nice that the Federal Reserve can just crank up the printing presses and create more money, out of thin air, to create an illusion that everything will be OK.  I wish I could do that if I overspend!

Quote of the Day

Congratulations to Mitt Romney, he was the big winner in the Michigan primary. … His dad used to be governor there, which I think is an inspiration. It proves in America that you don’t have to be the wife of a former president to win, sometimes you can just be the son of a governor.

Something is Wrong with this Picture

Recently, I was in the hospital for 3 days.  I am fine now.  The experience was illuminating in more ways than one.

  • $65 million was awarded to Kaleida Health to help close Millard Fillmore Gates Circle Hospital and move services to Buffalo General Hospital,
  • My whole experience doesn’t jive with the so-called need to close area hospitals, especially at a tremendous cost to taxpayers.  I waited about 5 hours to be seen in the emergency room at Millard Fillmore Suburban.  It was 2 or 3 more hours before a doctor, who had to be called in from Millard Fillmore Gates, saw me.

I needed to be admitted but there were no beds available, so I spent the night in the Emergency Room.  Late the next morning, a doctor, whom I presume to be one of the heads of the ER, told my nurse to call my doctor and downgrade my condition so I could be placed on a floor that didn’t correspond to what my doctor had ordered.  Beds were needed in the ER.

During my stay, I witnessed patients who were in Suburban while waiting for a bed to open up at Gates Circle.

The whole experience seemed to indicate a shortage of hospital beds.  Yet, we taxpayers are forking over 100’s of millions of dollars to assist the closing of hospitals.  It makes no sense!

How many millions will be raised during this money bomb?  Join the fun, socialize and meet other liberty-minded people.  More information is available on the Tonawanda Ron Paul Meetup site.

Whenever government becomes destructive of these ends (life, liberty, pursuit of happiness), it is the right of the people to alter or abolish it, and to institute a new government.

The battle of the bureaucracies is about to begin.  The two titans of government waste and inefficiency disagree on the safety of cloned animals used for food.

The FDA Says Clones Are Safe For Food even as the USDA Recommends That Food From Clones Stay Off the Market.  What is a consumer to do?

First, abolish both dreadful agencies and save the taxpayers some money.  Second, enact a simple law requiring that food from cloned animals is labeled and let the consumers and the market decide what is best.

This should be Eliot Spitzer’s primary challenge, combined with a reduction in spending and taxes.  Anything less from him will render him a complete failure.

Buffalo’s Renaissance Kick Started with School Choice

Posted by Michael Rebmann on January 15th, 2008

That could be the headline if a voucher system were implemented.  The winners would be the students, parents and the City.  The losers would be under-performing schools.

One of several things Democrat John O. Norquist became famous for during his four terms as mayor of Milwaukee was his enthusiastic implementation of a school-voucher system for his city.

The popularity of the school-choice program, which started in 1991 with 1,500 students and now serves more than 12,000 of the city’s roughly 110,000 students, has helped to reverse Milwaukee’s population decline, Norquist says. It has lured new residents to the city of 602,000 and it has kept many families from leaving for the suburbs when their kids hit school age.

Norquist is currently the president of the Congress for the New Urbanism in Chicago, where he was Thursday, Jan. 10, when I spoke with him by telephone.

Well, I can tell you this, the Ron Paul supporters in general will not be voting for any other candidate.  Once people have had a taste of freedom and liberty, they cannot go back.  Only a smattering of Ron Paul supporters would be caught dead voting for another Republican.  It would be really interesting to see what would happen if he did decide to make a third party bid.

Sadly, it has become clear that without a fair shake in the media, it is really difficult to make a realistic run for the White House.  On a very unscientific survey of anecdotal evidence (something that seems to be just as reliable as the polling methods these days that all but inaugurated Obama in New Hampshire) I have found that roughly 90% of the population has never heard Ron Paul’s message.  However, of those that hear the whole message, and not the twisted distorted filtered garbage the main stream media puts out, 80% become supporters.

    Healthy, Nutricious, Delicious & Easy

I’ve decided that it is time to shed some pounds.  I’m strongly considering signing up for the Healthy Living Diet by Ellie Krieger from the Food Network.  I love great tasting food and cooking.  This diet seems to fit the bill.  What this plan does is simplify the planning.  You pick your meals and generate weekly menus, recipes and a shopping list.  A customized fitness plan and online counseling is also included.  The weekly price of $5 is a bargain when you consider the convenience and time savings realized.

Below is a photo of African Peanut Stew.  This dish was featured last week in Relish Magazine which made its Buffalo News debut.  The recipe typifies the type of food I am looking for in a diet — great flavor and healthy!  The recipe is from Cheryl Forberg, chef and nutritionist for NBC’s The Biggest Loser.  I will be ordering her cookbook to augment my quest to lose weight.

    African Peanut Stew

The stew is easy to prepare and loaded with flavor from cilantro, curry powder, fresh ginger and garlic.  The edamame gives this dish a wonderful crunch and texture.  Edamame is fresh green soybeans which I found easily with the frozen Asian foods in Tops.  You can view a printer-friendly version of the recipe here.

Both of my sons loved this dish.  Add a glass of wine and some fresh baked whole grain bread and you will have a meal fit for company.

    Hillary Gift Giving

Posted by Michael Rebmann on January 11th, 2008

Hillary Clinton, realizing she has a real fight on her hands for the Democratic nomination for President, is proposing upwards of a $110 billion dollar giveaway of your tax dollars.

If you are a responsible person, pay your taxes and live within your means, Hillary wants to penalize you!

If you make bad financial decisions and don’t mind having a Nanny Government, it’s your lucky day. Did you mortgage more house than you can afford? It’s ok, Hillary is there for you.

BTW, are you wondering what happened to jobs? There’s no money to create them, Hillary is too busy giving away the money that could be used for job growth by the private sector.
