Make Your Voice Heard

Public Hearing Regarding Development of Downtown Buffalo

The Buffalo Common Council will hold a special meeting of the Council’s Community Development meeting chaired by Councilmember Joseph Golombek Jr. on Tuesday March 20th at 5:30 p.m. in the Council Chambers located on the 13th floor of City Hall.

The purpose of this evening meeting is to hear from the public as to what they would like to see happen in terms of development downtown. With the future demolition of the General Donovan building, rehab or demolition of the vacant Auditorium and the completion of the historic Erie Canal project, many development possibilities exist.

What would you like to see happen in terms of downtown development? Do you support a public market at the DL&W terminal? Do you support Bass Pro coming to Buffalo? Do you support the removal of the Skyway?

The public has not had much opportunity to comment about the development of downtown Buffalo. Now is your opportunity to let your voice be heard!

Congress is once again pretending to address its own failings by silencing voices it doesn’t want to hear.

First, it regulated campaign finance. This was supposed to prevent corruption. It didn’t. It merely made incumbents more secure by making it harder for challengers to raise the funds needed to compete with them.

Now they’re proposing so-called lobbying reform.
Congressional leaders tell us they “just can’t say no” to the lobbyists who ask them for hand-outs. So Congress pretends to regulate the lobbyists. Don’t believe it.

The legislation that Congress calls “lobbying reform” will really target small grassroots groups like DownsizeDC.org — groups that citizens use to communicate with Congress. Meanwhile, the so-called “Astroturf” groups, like those created by Jack Abramoff, will be exempt, as will unions, membership groups like AARP, large corporate controlled coalitions, and trade associations

.
It’s business as usual for K Street and Wall Street, while Main Street groups will have to expend scarce funds hiring lawyers and accountants to comply with the new regulations.

Congress wants to hear from you less often so it can continue giving away your money to “fat cat” special interests without being hassled so often by unhappy taxpayers. The fact that they will do this under the cover of supposed reform adds a wicked little twist to the knife they’re about to stick in your back.

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Media conglomerate Viacom Inc. said on Tuesday that it was suing Google Inc. and its Internet video-sharing site YouTube for more than $1 billion over unauthorized use of its programming online.

The lawsuit, the biggest challenge to date to Google’s ambitions to make YouTube into a major vehicle for advertising and entertainment, accuses the Web search leader and its unit of “massive intentional copyright infringement.”

Ah, evidence of what I said here about the politics of global warming.

Scientists who questioned mankind’s impact on climate change have received death threats and claim to have been shunned by the scientific community.

They say the debate on global warming has been “hijacked” by a powerful alliance of politicians, scientists and environmentalists who have stifled all questioning about the true environmental impact of carbon dioxide emissions.

Timothy Ball, a former climatology professor at the University of Winnipeg in Canada, has received five deaths threats by email since raising concerns about the degree to which man was affecting climate change.

The Most Dangerous Kind of Progressive

Walter Shapiro thinks — ”For Hillary Clinton, an authentic moderate Democrat, that hard-earned wisdom comes with a sense of political prudence and caution.”  More accurate would be her policy directors description — “Hillary is a very practical person — a practical progressive.”  In other words, she’ll feed doses of socialism upon society in small amounts and by the time people realize what happened, it will be too late.

Tim Tielman, an expert in Buffalo’s architecture and history, will lead a tour of sites related to Grover Cleveland’s life and career on Wednesday at 1:00 p.m. George Cleveland, the President’s grandson, will accompany Tielman. Mr. Cleveland, who lives in New Hampshire, is in town for a Free New York event to raise funds for a proposed Grover Cleveland Presidential Library.

Interested parties should gather at Betty’s Restaurant, 370 Virginia St., north of downtown Buffalo at about noon for a Dutch treat lunch. Grover Cleveland’s wife’s home was located at 168 Edward across the street. The tour will commence at 1:00 p.m. and last about two hours. Among the stops will be the Breckenridge Street Church, Grover Cleveland High School, the First Ward, and Old County Hall.

Tim Tielman is the executive director of the Campaign for Buffalo
History, Architecture, and Culture.

Free New York’s fundraiser is Wednesday from 6-9pm at Sonoma Grille. Click here for details. A portion of the proceeds will be used to purchase a site for the Presidential Library with a focus on the vacant Fairfield Library in North Buffalo.
