Rus Thompson has collected over 6,000 signatures to date for removal of the Grand Island Bridge Tolls.  Sam Hoyt (D – Buffalo, Grand Island) claims to be championing the cause, but is he effective?

south grand island bridgeWell, not really. If Mr. Hoyt was an effective legislator, this whole “Take Down The Tolls” fight would not be ongoing. For 7 years he has admitted to introducing legislation to take down the tolls, but to no avail. The toll booths leading to Grand Island have been a burning issue with the residents of the area for a long time, and it certainly sounds good when a candidate says, “I have been leading the fight for you guys on the tolls. I’ll keep introducing legislation until they come down.” That rhetoric will continue to get votes for a while, but sooner or later, it will begin to look silly.

Ms. Iannello is a new county legislator, having just been sworn to office in January, 2007, following her previous tenure as a Village of Kenmore trustee. While she has a great amount of experience with financial and social issues, her experience with matters such as this complex one are limited.

Meanwhile, traffic continues across the bridges; sometimes slowly, sometimes not at all, often with delays and dangerous conditions.

A federal jury in San Diego yesterday ordered Microsoft to pay $1.52 billion to Alcatel-Lucent for violating two patents for a technology used by hundreds of companies that allows users to play digital music on computers, cellphones and other portable devices.

The judgment, which lawyers from both sides called the largest patent award ever, raised the prospect that scores of other companies could now be financially liable for using the popular MP3 format.

400 other companies, including Apple, Real Networks, Palm and Samsung, could also be liable for patent infringement.

The University at Buffalo has received a $2.8 million grant from the National Institute of Child Health and Development for a clinical trial about pregnancy.

The economy sucks, good jobs are hard to find and people are leaving the area in droves.  The reason is the large amount of money the government takes from individuals and businesses.  Large amounts of the money taken is wasted and this study is an example of that waste.

There is no reason that the average person should be forced by threat of imprisonment to support studies like this.  Leave the money in the private sector and it will create jobs and economic growth.

Research has become an extension of government when it comes to funding.  If all research was left to the private economy, only research that is wanted and worthwhile would be undertaken.  Private research is also more cost efficient because companies are using their money.
