This past year the New York State Legislature spent $200 million for member item spending with virtually no accoutability. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out that vast amounts of money with no accountability equals theft and corruption.
A New York state senator was charged yesterday with stealing more than $400,000 in state money appropriated for charities in his district and using it for personal expenses and luxuries for himself and his family.
The charges against the senator, Efrain González Jr., a Bronx Democrat, were contained in a new indictment announced by the United States attorney in Manhattan and came four months after he was indicted on charges of stealing $37,000 from a nonprofit organization.

The Federal Government has finally stopped charging the excise tax on long distance telephone calls. The tax was created in 1898 to finance the Spanish-American War. While the war lasted only 3 months and ended long ago, the tax just kept on going.
Even though the war was 108 years ago, the tax you paid will only be refunded for the past 3 years. Conveniently, that is the statute of limitations on the refund.
The standard refund is $30 to $60, depending on family size. You can also dig out all your phone bills and claim the actual amount if it is higher. The I.R.S. rules and procedures are here.

I said it before and I’ll say it again, monetizing the shooting of the 2 police officers, Andolina and Parete, is wrong.
Now we have a round of commercial advertising that is bombarding us with the message that a raise would have somehow prevented the shooting from happening. It is beyond bad taste.
If you want to show your support for the two officers, there is a benefit being held for them tomorrow. The details are here.
