Milton Friedman: 1912-2006

Nobel Prize-winning economist Milton Friedman passed away on November 16, 2006 at the age of 94. Friedman was one of the most influential economists in the twentieth century and probably the most famous one advocating free markets, thanks in large part to his TV series and accompanying book “Free to Choose.”

Friedman was the brightest light in the Chicago school of economics, which also included Nobel Laureate George Stigler. Friedman was best known in economics for his theory of monetarism. This approach challenged the Keynesian theory that promoted the efficacy of manipulating the money supply to bring about positive economic result. Friedman believed in keeping a stable money supply and avoiding inflation. His insights gained currency in the 1970s as government attempts to deal with both unemployment and rising prices through Keynesian methods produced the worst of all worlds, “stagflation,” that is, high unemployment and high prices.

In today’s Buffalo News a Reverend writes in to Everybody’s Column about church closings.  He wants the government to step in to help alleviate the problem.  I guess the Constitution isn’t required reading in seminary schools.

The Reverend goes on to say that Churches, like healthcare and education, need to be accessible to all.  The state of education and health care is a mess due to government interference.  Churches already receive government support in the form of property tax relief.

The answer isn’t government support, it is figuring out what Churches can do to combat a declining population and finding better ways to address the needs of the public. The Reverend needs to look within, not for a handout.

It has just been announced by the Erie County Sheriff’s Department that DNA found in the Joan Diver murder matches DNA from the bike path murders.  The last confirmed bike path case was more than 20 years ago in 1994.

Police warn that his serial killer has a history of attacking females of all ages.
