This is a Reuben

This is the Reuben I wrote about here.  The same Reuben that prompted a lady to complain voice her opinion that there was too much meat and not enough cheese.  Trust me, the meat is delicious and anyone who wants less is nuts!

While waiting for my sandwich to be prepared I learned that all of the corned beef is cooked fresh daily at Joe’s Deli.  That explains why it is among the best, if not the best, corned beef sandwich around.  Try one the next time you’re hungry.  Joe’s Deli, located at the corner of Hertel and Colvin in North Buffalo.

Thoughts on Tomorrow’s Election

If you haven’t already taken the time to familiarize yourself with the candidates for public office, at least read through the election guide published by the League of Women Voters.  It is a non-partisan guide offering a basic understanding of the positions of the candidates.  You can download the guide here.

My votes tomorrow will be guided by two basic principles.

  • The need for a reduction in the size and scope of government which will lead to a reduction in taxes and spur an economic upturn.
  • The restoration of our Constitutional Democracy.

My choices, based on those principles, will be for the following candidates:

  • U.S. Senate - Jeffrey T. Russell
  • Governor/Lt. Governor - John Clifton/Donald Silberger, Ph.D.
  • State Attorney General - Christopher B. Garvey
  • State Comptroller - John J. Cain
  • 27th District Congressman - “none of the above” - Brian Higgins is leans to much toward Big Government and Michael McHale has waged a non-existent campaign.
  • NYS Senate 60th District - “none of the above” - no good candidates.
  • NYS Assembly 144th District - Rus Thompson

My recommendations for other districts:

If you wish to vote for a “write-in” candidate for a particular office, instead of one of the candidates on the ballot, first ask the poll workers at your polling place if it is allowable for that office. If it is, the poll workers can show you where the button is that will allow you to open the slot where you can write in your vote. Be sure to ask about this before you close the curtain and begin to vote. A pencil
should be in each voting booth for this purpose. Once you cast your write-in vote, you can vote for the other offices in the regular way, using the levers.

The White House said the timing of the announcement, two days before Election Day, had nothing to do with American politics and had been dictated by the Iraqi court. But Mr. Bush moved quickly to put it to use in what has been his central strategic imperative over the past week, trying to rouse Republican voters to turn out.

“Today we witnessed a landmark event in the history of Iraq: Saddam Hussein was convicted and sentenced to death by the Iraqi High Tribunal,” Mr. Bush said to roars of approval in a hockey auditorium packed with supporters in Grand Island, Neb. “Saddam Hussein’s trial is a milestone in the Iraqi people’s efforts to replace the rule of a tyrant with the rule of law.”

Gas prices are at the lowest level we’ve seen in quite a while and Saddam is about to be hanged.  My only thought is that Bush has no shame and will do anything to accomplish his agenda.  It would be nice if the American people were fully informed of just what this agenda is as their liberties are being stripped away and the Constitution is being defiled.

I read an interesting article tonight and I am not the only person expressing the thought that Bush is just as guilty of murder as Saddam Husseing.

But, to get to the main point, let us assume that Saddam is guilty as charged and that his death so serves the cause of justice that it is worth heightened sectarian conflict and even full-fledged civil war. What did Saddam do that Bush, and Cheney, and Rumsfeld, and Blair have not done?

If Saddam can be sentenced to death for his responsibility in the killing of 148 Shiites, what about Bush/Cheney/Rumsfeld/Blair’s responsibility for the tens of thousands of Iraqi civilians slaughtered by Bush’s invasion of Iraq? This massive carnage is the direct consequence of an illegal invasion – a war crime in itself for which Nazi leaders were sentenced to death – that was based on lies and deception. Bush himself admits that 30,000 Iraqi civilians have been killed. Iraq Body Count puts the civilian deaths at between 45,000 and 50,000. The recent Johns Hopkins University study published in the peer-reviewed British medical journal, The Lancet (11 Oct, 2006), puts the Iraqi civilian deaths caused by Bush’s invasion as high as 655,000.

Read it all here. BTW, the above quote was written by Ronald Reagan’s Assistant Secretary of the Treasury.
