Some people are taking exception to my comments here about Mayor Brown refusing the offer for National Guard help to clear downed tree limbs that have been piled near the curbs in Buffalo. Even if you subscribed to the theory that the City has done a good job with its resources, that doesn’t justify improving the process with outside help. There are still many streets with dangerous conditions because people have to avoid piles of tree limbs at the curbs. This situation is especially bad at night on streets without lighting, making it nearly impossible to see the obstructions until one is on top of them.
I’ll stick by my original thought that this is Byron Brown’s way to payback union support by making more overtime available to City workers. Brown’s explanation that other areas need the help more doesn’t wash. The National Guard is not opening up clogged streets, just clearing the debris that has been piled at the curbs.

I was going to write more about this subject, however, Chris has it covered here. I will comment by quoting myself from a previous comment I made on a post on indabuff.
Byron Brown is trying to play both sides to make everyone happy. He needs to clearly state whether he is for or against the casino and act accordingly. There is plenty he can do on either side of the issue. Right now it appears that his biggest fear is losing support from people by taking a firm stand.
Also, Byron Brown had refused requests, even FOIL requests from attorneys, to release a copy of the agreement. Once the ArtVoice article his the stands, last Thursday, Brown filed the agreement with the City Clerk and the Common Council.
The report is now available here for public viewing. You can read it yourself and you will discover that the preface is nothing but political propaganda. The actual “binding” part of the agreement is so full of qualifiers that it is essentially rendered useless.
