Bloggercon V will coincide with this event at the Terminal.

The Central Terminal Restoration Corporation (CTRC) is very pleased to announce that it is sponsoring Picnic on the Plaza IV: Oktoberfest on Saturday, September 23rd from 6pm to midnight at the Central Terminal on 495 Paderewski Drive in Buffalo. There will be a $5 admission fee at the door with all proceeds going towards the continued preservation and restoration of the Central Terminal.

In true German tradition, Oktoberfest is planned as close as possible to the first day of autumn, September 21st. Can’t make it to Munich this year? Celebrate right here in Buffalo! Enjoy a slice of Germany in our very own biergarten in the main concourse! Food, authentic German beers, soft drinks, and official Central Terminal merchandise will be available for purchase. Entertainment will be provided by Western New York’s most popular German band, The Frankfurters!

Come out and have a beer, dance a polka or two, or just enjoy an evening with friends!

The Central Terminal Restoration Corporation was founded in 1997. It’s mission is to preserve the historic 1929 New York Central train terminal on Buffalo’s East Side and help restore it to it’s former prominence in Buffalo’s architectural landscape. The CTRC is an all-volunteer, 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation that sponsors several public events and tours each year to support the continued preservation of this important landmark.

Put on your lederhosen and come on out for a good time and to support a great organization.

The announcement that Governor Pataki had signed the pension bill came as the Republican-led State Senate confirmed more than 50 of his appointments — including several contributors, former employees and political allies — to posts that will last long after he leaves office at the end of the year. Some of those jobs pay more than $90,000 a year.

State Senator Joseph L. Bruno, who as the Republican majority leader has been a sometime ally of the governor, said that Mr. Pataki should be free to do what he wants until his term ends. “The term, to my knowledge, expires midnight on Dec. 31, and this governor is elected until then,” Mr. Bruno said. “And if on the 30th he has something that he wants to do as governor, he is the elected representative of the people, so I respect that.”

Governor Pataki echoed those words when asked about the appointments. “I’m the governor of the State of New York, and God willing, I’ll be the governor until Dec. 31 and I will exercise the powers of governor,” he said.

Who to Blame for Falling Gas Prices?

Sound the alarm! Gas prices are falling!

I was going to say something about “Where’s the congressional investigation about this?” . . . but TV commentator Neil Cavuto beat me to it.

Over at the Foxnews website, Cavuto notes that as of early September, gas prices had dropped by some 20% in the recent month. Yet he hasn’t seen a single politician “running to a microphone. Not a one calling for an investigation. Not a one demanding hauling the oil CEOs back to Capitol Hill.”

Good point, Mr. Cavuto. What are the gas companies up to? We know they’re up to something, right? Let’s get those oil execs back on the hot seat! What is their scheme? Are they letting the market fluctuate naturally in response to changes in supply and demand? I’ll bet it’s something like that! They’re just the type to do something like that!

So what happened? One analyst suggests a couple factors. First, we have greater inventory this year because of preparations for a hurricane season that is turning out, so far, to be less ferocious than predicted. Second, worries about global hot spots like the Middle East have now faded a bit. The next time a war breaks out, very likely prices will go up again.

One thing’s for sure. Where there are effects, there are causes. It’s not just a bunch of guys sitting in a board room deciding what prices will be. In a free market, nobody wields such unilateral power.

This is Common Sense. I’m Paul Jacob.
