The Power Authority and Pork

Residents are leaving Buffalo in record numbers due to high taxes, lack of jobs and an overall anti-business climate. Public Authorities, such as the Power Authority, significantly contribute to the decline of our area. The mini-fiefdoms consume our money and spend it with little or no oversight.

The latest example is a $10,000 grant that Sam Hoyt secured from the Power Authority to build a “dog park.” Yes, that is right, I said “dog park.” I’m sure the City will become repopulated any moment now as this news spreads across the country!

If Sam Hoyt was doing the job he was elected to do, representing the voters’ best interests, he would be investigating the pork & patronage at the Power Authority. Instead, he participates by throwing us a $10,000 bone!

A Moment of Silence for Ann Richards

“I did not want my tombstone to read, ‘She kept a really clean house.’ I think I’d like them to remember me by saying, ‘She opened government to everyone,’” Richards said shortly before leaving office in January 1995.

Ann Richards was a politician that I admired. She had the straight-forward, folksy way of talking that I found refreshing. Listening to Richards was more like listening to your grandmother speaking, her thoughts were full of anecdotal analogies that one only gains from experience.

Asked once what she might have done differently had she known she was going to be a one-term governor, Richards grinned.

“Oh, I would probably have raised more hell.”

Naturally, I was planning on a post-primary commentary Wednesday, however things didn’t quite work out. I spent most of the day at Millard Filmore Gates. Not one of my top 10 activities. I’m one of those people who tend to ignore an illness, not always a good thing to do. I woke up Wednesday from a bout of coughing, I thought it was just another case of bronchitis, that caused a severe stabbing pain in my side. I thought I had coughed so hard that I fractured a rib. I’ve had fractured ribs before and the pain was nearly identical. After a 4 1/2 hour wait in the emergency room, I finally was seen by a doctor. The examination and subsequent x-rays revealed that I have a nice case of pneumonia in both lungs. Needless to say, I feel like total crap! The doctor’s first reaction to my x-rays was to admit me. He was actually amazed that I was functioning and came to the hospital under my own power. That was just enough to convince him to let me return home with a very stern warning to immediately go back to the hospital if I feel worse.

So, here I am, at home, taking my meds and not doing much of anything else. On the bright side, I should be able to knock off a few books while I’m recovering.
