Labor Day Weekend

I had hoped to kick of Saturday with a visit to the Buffalo Wing Festival.  I’ve never been there.  Unfortunately, the weather forecast looks like rain for most of the day tomorrow.  Sunday looks much better, perhaps I will wait until then.

I was browsing through the website for the Wing Fest to get an idea what time events are happening and looking for some information on the food being sold.  I was very unhappy to find out that they do not provide any information about food prices or what is offered. Some people like to budget their entertainment expenses, myself being in that group.  The only thing mentioned on the website is that food tickets are $1.

Other than the Wing Festival, I will probably get out with my camera and look for some good spots to shoot photos.

Six Flags Will Not Reopen

going down Sources have confirmed that Six Flags Amusement Park in Darien, New York, will not reopen in the spring. The park is for sale as part of a block of six parks being sold by Six Flags. Paul Snyder has expressed an interest in purchasing the park that he originally built. Six Flags, however, said they have no interest in selling any of the six parks individually.

The Giant Wheel Time will tell what becomes of the park. I can’t imagine they would want to see the park sitting idle. Perhaps they are considering selling the rides to other parks. Six Flags followed that route after the closing of their park in Houston, Texas.

The Unofficial End to Summer

Last night marked the unofficial end to summer in Buffalo.  It was the last Thursday at the Square of the season.  It portends the beginning of that busy time of year when schools are back in session and we quickly seem to slide into the Holiday Season.

The night is one to be enjoyed and the variety of the music appealed to a wide range of tastes.  Unfortunately I did not make it to the Square until The Ifs were clearing off the stage.  Having heard them for the first time at the Taste of Buffalo, I was disappointed at missing them.  Luckily, they have a website with their schedule posted.  I will hear them perform again soon!

Next up was Tom Stahl and the Dangerfields.  Their unique sound combined with a mixture of humor was thoroughly enjoyable.  It was my first time hearing them and I look forward to doing so again.

The headliner was Eric Burdon and the Animals.  Judging by appearances, I would say that Eric and the keyboards player were the only 2 original members still performing.  As I was watching Eric ascend the ramp to the stage, I was planted right at the front edge of the stage, I wondered if he still had “it”.  My doubts were erased once he started to sing.  His moving vocals still had power and the band he has assembled knows how to rock and roll.

Below is a slide show with some of my photos from the event.  Enjoy!

Junk Mail

Today I received the following piece of junk mail at home.

It is always nice when junk mail is readily identified and can be quickly disposed of without the need to open and verify the contents.

I found the return address interesting.  It has been widely charged that Spitzer is all style and no substance and that his political standing is a product of the publicity he has created while making NYS anti-business.  The suggestion is that he is nothing more than a product of Madison Avenue.  The return address certainly points to that conclusion.

Allegations of Political Threats

As I was driving this afternoon and listening to the Sandy Beach show, I heard allegations that Rep. Tom Reynolds threatened Satish Mohan for endorsing Leonard Roberto in his quest to dethrone State Senator Dale Volker.  The threat was that Satish would be ruined financially if he doesn’t pull his advertisements endorsing Roberto.

Similar allegations are being made on the SpeakupWNY forums.

Well, the Cat’s out of the Bag!!! Sandy Beach broke the story on his lead off today. It has been confirmed with Satish Mohan that Tom Reynolds and Dale Volker have threatened Satish Mohan. They Have told Mohan to remove the ads supporting Roberto or they will remove federal and state funding to the town of Amherst. The amount of money removed would have to be made up with a town tax increase of about 10% ! Because Sandy broke the story today, a press release is being written as I type and both Satish and Lenny Roberto will on air with Sandy Beach Tuesday with the full details. This is election tampering at the highest levels and the appropriate agencies are being contacted.

AND

***Breaking News**** Satish Mohan just finished an interview with channel 2 news confirming that he has been in contact with Dale Volker and Tom Reynolds!! He fell short of calling the conversations “Threats”. He did go on to say that he only wishes to run the town unimpeded. Leonard Roberto was interviewed next and confirmed the earlier post. Satish is trying to get out of the middle of this contest with out hurting the town or either candidate. All he had to do was ask, we would never want to hurt the residents of Amherst with tax increases!! Watch channel 7 news tonight for more details. The Roberto campaign is heading to Geneseo and Canandaigua tomorrow.

Stay tuned to the Sandy Beach show Tuesday at 3 PM for more details.

It is no secret that I despise Spitzer.  Accordingly, I figure that the least I can do is to keep providing reasons why.  Following are a couple of excerpts with links to the full articles.

Indeed, Spitzerism leads to more regulation and higher costs. Masters quotes University of Chicago law professor Richard Epstein, who neatly sums up the economic and political problems with this approach: “Wall Street is a national market, and the reforms Spitzer is putting in are affecting the whole country. It wasn’t as though the folks in Illinois elected him as our attorney general.”

But now, New Yorkers appear on the verge of electing Spitzer as governor. New York already chases away businesses and jobs due to burdensome government, including over-regulation. What signal would be sent to businesses with a Gov. Spitzer? After all, he has been an overreaching regulator in a job without regulatory powers. Imagine what he could do as governor. It can’t be good for New York’s economy.

So, again, why is Spitzer strolling into the governor’s office?

(more here)

The following excerpt is from a review of the book Spoiling for a Fight

Some New Yorkers know this; most of them don’t, or don’t care. There’s literally no chance that the millions of voters who’ve followed Spitzer this far will reject him at the polls in ten weeks. But this election will probably signal the end of Spitzer’s rock star period. New York’s sclerotic state government is unlikely to make the boldest reforms Spitzer jaws about. The groups that will do the most to elect him—unions, liberals, minority voters—will blanch at the compounds Spitzer wants to mix in the New York laboratory. New York Daily News political reporter Ben Smith points out that Spitzer has “backed state financing for parochial schools and ‘roving’ wiretaps for police… [and] calls the New York Civil Liberties Union’s resistance to the wiretap law somewhat ludicrous.’”
