Finally, the right thing is going to be done. People who were assessed and paid the $40 towing charge tacked on to parking tickets, even though there was no tow, can file a notice of claim with the City to obtain a refund. Personally, I think checks should be mailed without people having to go through any rigmarole to get their money.
Mayor Brown, who was opposed to refunding the money (let’s hope if you lose your wallet, he doesn’t find it) was basically over-ruled by the Common Council. The Council, unlike the Mayor, made the right decision.
Milton J. Jeffries, a 17-year-veteran of the police force, has been suspended WITHOUT PAY as a result of writing hundreds of parking tickets with bogus towing charges. I’m sure his defense will be something along the lines of “I only did it to help my fellow union members get the raise they deserve.”
