Canal Festival Continued . . .

The goal was to spend a couple of leisurely hours browsing the large arts & crafts show at the Canal Festival. The sky darkened and the funnel cloud (pictured in the previous post) appeared as I was crossing over the Erie Canal on my way to the North Tonawanda segment of the festival. The streets emptied quickly as I ducked in to a booth just past the bridge.

The timing was good, the clouds let loose with a soaking downpour.
lots of rain
After the rain let up, my friends and I ventured out and wandered through quite a bit of the arts & crafts show encountering varying degrees of rain. After about 20 minutes, the sky let loose with another volley and we had to find cover in the doorway of a business. From there I had the opportunity to get a couple of shots showing how amazing the clouds looked.

unstable atmosphere
My friends were hungry and ran to Nestor’s for a bite to eat. I remained in my dry spot and enjoyed the rain, thunder and lightning. I wandered out when the rain let up, looking for something interesting to shoot. Hanging bottles were about all I came up with before even more rain began to fall.

funnel cloud, originally uploaded by mike in wny.

Normally one enjoys funnel cakes at the Canal Festival. I’m used to unexpected storms, thunder and mucho lightning this summer. Today, as I was crossing the bridge over the canal, I had a new surprise. Up in the sky, a funnel cloud was forming. The rain was just starting to fall and I was torn between keeping my camera dry or taking it out of my camera bag and getting some photos. I was disappointed that the funnel cloud didn’t develop more fully, I wanted a really impressive shot. The funnel cloud was visible for about 1 minute, growing and shrinking constantly before it finally dissolved. Click the picture to view a large version for a good look at the funnel cloud
