Ironically, Moussaoui has been the only person tried, and also convicted, for the acts committed on 9/11. Osama Bin Laden, in a new tape, says that Moussaoui had nothing to do with it.
Whom do you believe? There is little doubt we have gone to war in Iraq based on false assertions. Now we have a person sentenced to life based on assertions by the same powers that led us into war. This appears to be a case of “reasonable doubt”. In retrospect, the decision to sentence Moussaoui to life, rather than death, seems to have been prudent. Even it was only one juror holding out. That is how our system works.
I am in no means defending Bin Laden, just suggesting that our reaction to 9/11 has been off base.

While addressing Georgetown University Law School graduates, Roberts unveiled a plan to take the politics out of Supreme Court decisions. The heart of the plan involves deciding cases on narrow legal grounds rather than issuing sweeping decisions which affect a broader range of legal issues. His goal is to eliminate the 5-4 decisions which have a polarizing effect on the country.
“If it is not necessary to decide more to a case, then in my view it is necessary not to decide more to a case,” Roberts said. “Division should not be artificially suppressed, but the rule of law benefits from a broader agreement. The broader the agreement among the justices, the more likely it is a decision on the narrowest possible grounds.”
He noted that many controversial cases will be decided in the final six weeks of the current term. Cases will include the presidential wartime powers and the political boundaries from redistricting in Texas.
The Supreme Court has been under attack recently from Congress. Both Justice Ginsberg and Justice Scalia have publicly issued calls for Congress to back off. If Roberts’ plan succeeds, it will help restore the dignity of the Supreme Court and silence critics.
It sounds to me like a well thought out plan to promote cooperation rather than division.
