Spitzer’s stance on tolls shows he grasps key issues 4/16/2006
I am heartened by Eliot Spitzer’s support for the elimination of the tolls at the Black Rock and Ogden Street barriers. As we all recognize, these tolls serve as essentially a commuter tax on residents.More than 50 years ago, a terribly shortsighted decision was made to build a highway along our waterfront, stealing this tremendous asset from our citizens and impeding access to that magnificent section of our waterfront. Adding insult to injury, we have been forced to pay a toll to use that section of highway to access downtown. There have been four governors since that ill-fated decision, Republicans and Democrats alike, none of whom had the courage to stand up for what was right for our community.
In a move that once again demonstrates Spitzer’s grasp of the issues that are important to our region, he has pledged to act expediently as governor to eliminate these tolls. I know that he sees Buffalo as I do, a magnificent city on the verge of enormous success and growth, and that he understands that strengthening our cities is the key to strengthening our state. Eliminating these tolls will be an important step in revitalizing our great city, and I am confident that together we can effect this change.
Sam Hoyt
Assemblyman, Buffalo
The key point being asserted in this piece is that Spitzer has a grasp of the key issues. As was pointed out by BuffaloPundit, there are many issues facing this region that are more significant than the toll issue. Don’t get me wrong, I am not in favor of the tolls, but I would like to see many other issues addressed with the political fervor attached to this issue.
Also, as I have stated many times, I am not a Spitzer fan and I believe the only reason he is speaking out about the tolls is that he is a master of attracting publicity which appears beneficial to the majority of voters. Sam Hoyt is entitled to his opinion and it is his right to plug Spitzer. I would prefer that he simply endorses him without making conclusions based on a relatively minor issue.
To sum up, I have two words to say - “Go Suozzi!”
Update: The food turned out really good. The meat was tender and if you’re a garlic fan, you would love it. The potatoes and carrots had a really good flavor and the sauce from the meat juices and liquids added was really good.

Alright, I admit, I stayed out too late last night and dinner just went into the oven about 1/2 an hour ago. Digressing for a minute, breakfast at the Lake Effect Diner, at 5:30 this morning, was good. I ordered the eggs benedict and they were delicious, made with real canadian peameal bacon - not the phony stuff sold in supermarkets around here. Back to the dinner. I decided on Garlic-Studded Pot Roast, the recipe is from Emeril. If it tastes half as good as it smells while it is cooking, it will be delicious. Here’s a few preliminary pics:

The roasting pan is lined with a bed of veggies.

The roast is seared on all sides after being studded with 20 half cloves of garlic and rubbed with spices.

Easter is one of those wonderful holidays that incorporates food into the celebration. I started off my day with some coffee and Placek that I purchased from the Chrusciki Bakery yesterday at the Broadway Market. I love to cook, but baking does not have the same appeal to me. For today’s dessert I purchased a Red Velvet Cake, with cream cheese icing, from Budweys. I’ll update this with a quick thumbs up or thumbs down on the roast.

These colorful eggs were among the many interesting items found at the Broadway Market yesterday. As soon as I walked through the front door the amazing smells from the baked goods overwhelmed me.

The market is a wonderful place to shop for fresh meats, fruits & vegetables, baked goods and many other things. I’ll shut up now and let the rest of the photos speak for themselves. Click here to view all 6 pictures in a slideshow.
