Buffalo News - Golisano opposes casino

Buffalo Sabres owner B. Thomas Golisano said Tuesday that while he is late in opposing the Seneca Nation’s new Buffalo Creek casino - and its “video crack” slot machines - he is willing to help the litigants suing to block the development in state and federal courts.

The momentum is growing to oppose the casino. Many think it is a done deal, however, with the current court battle, started with the support of the Wendt Foundation, the fight has just begun. Golisano jumping on board is a major source of support. We were lied to about the source of gamblers, the state’s share of the profits is obscene compared to the local share and the casino will unfairly impact local businesses.

On its face, the sale of land to the Senecas appears to be illegal. Senator John McCain has indirectly addressed the land sale issue stating that the legislation allowing these types of sales was meant to facilitate the purchase of land adjacent to reservations. Not remote locations in the middle of urban areas. The federal government seems to have abdicated its duty of due diligence in approving the sale of land to the Senecas. Let us hope that the courts do the right thing.
